Common Symptoms of Depresssion
Regardless of what you got from the quiz above, you should familiarize yourself with the most common symptoms of depression. You'll find them listed below:
- Feeling sad/hopeless/excessively pissed off when people sit down next to you and tell you just to "Cheer up! :D"
- Lack of appetite or excessive eating/bingeing
- Significant weight loss or weight gain
- Difficulty sleeping or staying asleep
- Feeling tired all the time
- Low self-esteem or a feeling like you've failed at life / let other people down
- Trouble concentrating or keeping in the moment
- Being either excessively restless and fidgety or particularly lethargic and slow on movement and/or speech
- Thoughts of suicide, or a general feeling that the world would be better off if you didn't exist/were "taken care of" by an elite team of assassins
- Self-inflicted physical harm, perhaps through heavy drinking, drug use, cutting, excessive exercise, severe dieting, bulimia, etc.
If any or all of these things
- Are making it difficult to work
- Are hurting your social life
- Have made at least one person verbally express worry about you
- Made it hard to handle your personal life/finances/household
- Have lasted for more than two weeks
... then you're probably clinically depressed.
Find Help & Hope
If something feels wrong, it probably is. Seek and get the help you need - it seriously makes a difference!
If it means anything, I've had times in my life where I couldn't remember what it felt like to be happy, to have hope, or to have a reason for living. I had times in my life when I thought that I would never be without pain or find even a shred of hope. But I was lucky enough to get help when I needed it, and if you find yourself unhappy like this, you should too. I'm happy now—I seriously love my life, and those sucky times just seem like a bad dream.
Beating depression isn't easy—some major work on your outlook, metacognition, and thought processes is mandatory. Sometimes, you'll also have to make major changes in your life—like what you do, where you live, who you see, how you eat, etc...
You might even need to use medication to help get yourself out of the hole. Is it a pain in the butt? Yeah—but you've got to do what you've got to do!
