How to Choose a Psychologist

A positive relationship between the therapist and the patient is critical to the success of psychological therapy. This is the foundation for building the confidence needed to work through internal conflicts, the commitment to complete assigned tasks and advice, and the desired positive outcomes. However, getting into this relationship can be more difficult than you think.

It's not easy to find a good psychologist. What's the best way to deal with this? Knowing who will treat your problem allows you to go in with a more open mind and a more positive attitude and without creating expectations that may lead to disappointment if you are not satisfied in the way you expect.

Why Is It Essential to Research a Psychologist?

Ignorance or lack of information about the work to be done is one of the main reasons why the patient-therapist relationship fails. The client may discover that the psychologist's approach style does not suit their needs or that they do not feel completely at ease once the consultation is completed and the parameters are established.

As a result, the patient's defensive posture will affect future work, or they will simply stop coming and have a negative impression of psychological therapy.

So, nowadays, many therapists offer their services on their websites or through social media, where they discuss their influences, specializations, and articles on treatments and psychological approaches, which helps to get a first impression of the therapist and thus ease anticipated anxiety, have a clear vision of what to expect and have more confidence to share your problems with them.

Even if you have collected all of the information you need about the psychologist you plan to see, it is very important that you speak directly with your consultant about how their speciality and assistance can be suited to your needs and solve the problem once you get there.

It is important to put shame aside and clarify any doubts you may have about the investment you are about to make; after all, you are going to work with the said psychologist for your mental and integral well-being. And that is exactly why you go to therapy in the first place: to improve, not to weaken.

7 Things You Should Keep in Mind

1. Seek With Sincerity

As we all know, there are a variety of mental health specialists, ranging from motivational coaches to psychotherapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists, each with their own area of expertise. So, if you don't feel comfortable in psychological therapy, you may need to seek treatment from another specialist; be honest with your therapist and let him help you.

Finding a professional who specializes in your problem or has an ideal approach to it is a good way to ensure an ideal therapeutic relationship with a psychologist. This will lessen your fear of the unknown and increase your chances of getting a positive outcome from these sessions.

2. Make It Professional

Although this may seem very obvious, many people overlook this key element when seeking psychological help for the first time. It is essential that you confirm that he is a qualified specialist in a psychological field relevant to your problem; this will help you avoid misunderstandings and ensure that you improve.

Another important reason why the patient-therapist relationship fails is because of differences in the intervention, in the sense that things can be taken for granted in the first session, and the intervention is the absolute opposite of what is required. To avoid this, ask them to describe the strategy, including what important issues they will cover, how they will implement it, and how long it will last.

3. Browse the Internet

As I stated earlier, searching for a psychologist on the internet is a good way to reduce anxiety and anticipatory doubts about going to one. Thousands of psychologists have social media pages, websites, and blogs where they promote their services and write about a variety of topics that can increase empathy and provide assurance that this is the approach you need to solve your particular problem.

4. Don't Get Obsessed

As you may know that there are different psychological schools of thought, approaches, and techniques that evolve over time, so don't limit yourself to one that you have read about or are familiar with. Maybe your problem could be solved using a completely different approach or a combination of approaches.

If you prefer to insure in person, you can learn more about the psychologists who work there and their approaches by visiting a psychological health center or the psychology section of a clinic or hospital. You'll feel more confident and have more options on the table this way.

5. Lower Your Expectations if Needed

It is not bad to have a prior idea in mind of how you want the issues to arise or how you would like the relationship with your psychologist to be, but you must know that this may not be exactly as you have imagined it. This does not mean that it's something bad. What you must ensure is that the path they take is advantageous for you and that although it is difficult to face, the results will be valuable instead of making you feel worse.

6. Share Your Experience and Thoughts

If you have already seen a psychologist and have not had a positive experience, tell your current psychologist so that he does not follow the same path. If you are seeing a psychologist for the first time, talk about what you want to achieve.

If you have any prior experiences, it is critical that you share them with your psychologist. So let him know what you're thinking and what you're afraid of. Tell him how you're feeling and what's bothering you. Tell him what offends you, what makes you happy, and how you'd like him to work with you. Clear everything from doubts to expectations.

7. Evaluate and Discover

They say the first impression is the last impression, and in the case of psychological therapy, it's quite true. You can discover a lot of things from your first therapy session. In it, you can see the interest of the psychologist in your case. If you have confidence and safety in their clinic, if there is a connection, if he is responsible, and especially, is he professional. You may also evaluate whether he judges you or is personally involved more than necessary.

It is very important that you consolidate the issue of confidentiality with your psychologist. Everything you say in therapy should stay in the clinic and not leave those walls unless they need support for an approach or have to recommend another specialist. However, if this case occurs, the psychologist is obliged to inform you.

Do Your Homework!

In summary, to ensure you choose an ideal psychologist, you need to be knowledgeable about who he is and his expertise. Keep in mind (or write) any doubt you have, and go for it with the best possible attitude.

Always be open and honest with your psychologist so that he can provide you with the best possible care. The psychologist will identify the most effective psychological therapy for you, taking into account your personality, way of life, family, and job needs, as well as the factors that lead to any mental disease.

Your article is great. I am myself facing anxiety and depression for the past 6-7 years so I know the importance of psychological counseling. Counseling can only be effective if you feel safe and secure with the counselor and have trust. It is also very important that the counselor should not judge you otherwise it can cause an adverse effect.

Very informative article.
