Uses and Side Effects of Beclomin Cream
What Is Beclomin?
Beclomin is a skin preparation manufactured by Leben Pharmaceuticals, located in India. It is an anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory skin ointment. The active ingredients are Beclomethasone Dipropionate 0.025%w/w, Miconazole Nitrate 2% w/w, and Neomycin sulphate 0.5%w/w.
When Is It Prescribed?
This cream is prescribed by doctors to treat complicated skin infection characterized by mixed fungal and bacterial infections with surrounding inflammation (redness, edema, and oozing). In addition, it is prescribed by doctors when the exact cause for skin disease cannot be easily identified.
- Beclomethasone Dipropionate: This is a potent steroid that is used to treat inflammation. It is useful in skin conditions characterized by redness, itchiness and edema. Skin applications contains steroids are used in conditions such as Psoriasis, Eczema, and seborrhic dermatitis. In addition, steroid skin preparations are useful for quick symptom relief in infective skin conditions. However, they should be used with anti infective agents. Otherwise infections get worsened due to immunosuppressive effect of steroids.
- Miconazole: This is the anti-fungal medication in Beclomin. It is effective for wide variety of skin funguses.
- Neomycin: This is an antibiotic that will help to kill bacteria.
What are the specific skin lesions that can be treated with Beclomin?
Beclomin can be used in infected eczema. Fungal infections associated with bacterial infections. (e.g. due scratching fungal infected skin area can be secondarily infected by bacteria causing pus formation). In addition, this can be used in vaginal candidiasis associated with redness and inflammation. In addition, this ointment can be used in bacterial vaginitis.
However, you should not use Beclomin to treat shingles or herpes infections. It will greatly worsen the infection due to immunosuppressive effect of Beclomethasone. In addition, do not use this on viral warts.
Side effects are mainly caused by steroid beclomethasone in this preparation. Beclomethasone local application can cause skin thinning, redness and aggravate certain skin infections. It is especially dangerous to use Beclomin in viral skin infections such as shingles.
In addition, some individual will get skin irritation and redness after applying this ointment. Very rarely allergic reactions can occur. Allergic reactions can be identified by hives, itchiness, redness, and swelling. Extremely rarely this product can cause severe form of allergic reaction called anaphylactic reaction characterized by widespread hives and difficulty in breathing. This is a medical emergency that need to be treated in an emergency department.

- Skin thinning
- Skin irritation
Beclomin should not be used to treat viral skin lesions.
