What are Candid-V1, -V3, and V-6?

Candid-V1, -V3, and -V6 are anti-fungal vaginal preparations used to treat vaginal candidiasis, commonly known as a yeast infection.

The numbers in the name of the medicine indicate how many days it needs to be applied, so Candid-V1 is used for one day, Candid-V3 is used for three days, and Candid V-6 is used for six days.

Clotrimazole is the principle anti-fungal ingredient in the Candid-V series.

What Is the Difference Between Candid-V1, -V3, -V6

The V1 tablet contains 500mg of Clotrimazole. Each V3 tablet contains 200mg, with the entire series consisting of 600mg. Each V6 tablet contains 100mg, with the entire series consisting of 600mg like the V3 series. Each tablet in the V3 and V6 preparations should be inserted in consecutive nights.

Generally, mild to moderate yeast infections can be treated with a V1 preparation, as it is easier to use. The other preparations can be used in other less clear-cut vaginal conditions such as vaginal bacterial vaginitis.

What Is a Yeast Infection?

A healthy vagina has many bacteria and a small number of yeast cells. The most common bacteria, Lactobacillus acidophilus, helps keep other organisms—like yeast—under control.

When something happens to change the balance of these organisms, yeast can grow too much and cause a yeast infection. Usually the culprit is a type of yeast called Candida albicans. Taking antibiotics sometimes causes this imbalance. The high estrogen levels caused by pregnancy or hormone therapy can also cause it, as can certain health problems like diabetes or HIV infection.

These infections are very common. Although they can bother you a lot, they are not usually serious and the treatment is simple.

A yeast infection causes itching or soreness in the vagina and sometimes causes pain or burning when you urinate or have sex. Some women also have a thick, clumpy, white discharge that has no odor and looks a little like cottage cheese.

These symptoms are also more likely to occur during the week before your menstrual period.

Short Video on Vaginal Yeast Infections, or Vaginal Candidiasis

Should You Treat Your Symptoms?

It's easy to incorrectly self-diagnose a vaginal infection. Two-thirds of women who buy over-the-counter anti-yeast infection products actually have a different type of infection.

See your doctor if you aren't sure what you have or if this is the first time you have had these symptoms. Yeast infections are common during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, don't use medicine for a yeast infection without talking to your doctor first.

If you have had a yeast infection before and can recognize the symptoms, and you aren't pregnant, you can treat yourself at home with medicines you can buy without a prescription, such as one of the Candid-V series.

If your symptoms are mild, you may want to wait to see if they clear up on their own.

Candid vaginal tablet Applicator

Candid vaginal tablet Applicator

How to Use Candid-V1, -V3, and -V6

This medication comes with a tablet and an applicator.

To use the vaginal tablets, read the instructions provided with the medication and follow these steps:

  1. Unwrap a tablet, wet it with lukewarm water, and place it on the applicator as shown in the instructions that come with the product.
  2. Lie on your back with your knees drawn upward and spread apart.
  3. Insert the applicator high into your vagina (unless you are pregnant), and then push the plunger to release the medication. If you are pregnant, insert the applicator gently. If you feel resistance (hard to insert), do not try to insert it further; call your doctor.
  4. Withdraw the applicator.
  5. Discard the applicator if it is disposable. If the applicator is reusable, pull it apart and clean it with soap and warm water after each use.
  6. Wash your hands promptly to avoid spreading the infection.

The tablet should be inserted as deep as possible in the vagina, preferably at bedtime to prevent it from leaking out should you stand up. Do not use the medication when menstruating. Also, avoid having sex while using the medication.

For better response, this medication should be taken with local antifungal cream that is applied on the outer vagina (e.g. candid cream). In addition, applying local antifungal medication such as candid cream on the penis of the sexual partner will prevent reinfection and ensure long-lasting response.

Use the vaginal cream or tablets as directed on the package. If your symptoms do not improve within three or seven days, call your doctor. If your symptoms return in less than two months, also call your doctor.

Continue to use the tablets until they are all gone, even if you feel well.

Note: This medication should not be used by virgins in countries where it is important to maintain integrity of the hymen. For them, severe vaginal candidiasis can be treated with prescription oral anti-fungal medications such as Fluconazole.

Side Effects of Candid-V1, -V3, and -V6 Preparations

The Candid-V1, -V3, and -V6 medications are generally well tolerated. However, some women may experience some of the following symptoms. If you do, you should notify your doctor immediately:

  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Irritation
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Fever
  • Foul-smelling discharge

In addition, allergic reactions can occur in some women. Severe allergic reactions should be treated in an emergency department.

Before You Start Using Candid-V1, -V3, or -V6

Here are some precautions you should take before you start to use this medication:

  • Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to clotrimazole or any other drugs.
  • Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription drugs you are taking, especially antibiotic medications and vitamins.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had liver disease, problems with your immune system, human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV), acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), diabetes, or a history of alcohol abuse.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while using clotrimazole, call your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor if you drink alcohol.

Other Important Information

Keep all appointments with your doctor. Clotrimazole cream, lotion, and solution are for external use only. Do not swallow the vaginal tablets or vaginal cream.

If you have a vaginal infection, refrain from sexual intercourse. An ingredient in the cream may weaken certain latex products like condoms or diaphragms; do not use such products within 72 hours of using this medication. Wear clean cotton panties (or panties with cotton crotches), not panties made of nylon, rayon, or other synthetic fabrics.

Do not let anyone else use your medication. Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about refilling your prescription. If you still have symptoms of infection after you finish the clotrimazole, call your doctor.

It is important for you to keep a written list of all of the prescription and nonprescription (over-the-counter) medicines you are taking, as well as any products such as vitamins, minerals, or other dietary supplements. You should bring this list with you each time you visit a doctor or if you are admitted to a hospital. It is also important information to carry with you in case of emergencies.
